Few roads capture the imagination of British drivers quite like Snake Pass. Stretching across the dramatic Peak District National Park between Glossop in Derbyshire and Ladybower Reservoir near Sheffield, this legendary route has earned its place as one of Britain’s most iconic driving roads.

A Road with History
Despite its dramatic name, Snake Pass wasn’t named because of winding bends or an abundance of snakes.
The name actually comes from The Snake Inn, a historic coaching inn built in the early nineteenth century. The inn itself took its name from the Duke of Devonshire’s coat of arms, which features a serpent.
The modern A57 follows a route first developed in the early 1800s to improve transport across the Pennines, linking Manchester and Sheffield more efficiently than ever before.
More than two centuries later, it remains one of Britain’s most memorable drives.

The road climbs high into the Peak District, weaving through open moorland before descending towards the stunning waters of Ladybower Reservoir.
