But when it does, it can be glorious.

We’ve been enjoying some absolutely fantastic weather recently, dry roads, clear skies and, on many days, temperatures that have made Britain feel considerably less British than usual and on days like these, there’s something wonderfully simple about getting into the car, lowering the roof or just winding down the windows and heading out onto the open road.

No particular urgency. Perhaps not even a particular destination. Just you, the car and somewhere interesting ahead.

Which got us thinking…

What better car to celebrate that feeling than the Jaguar E-Type?

The Car That Arrived Like a Thunderbolt

The E-Type made its public debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1961.

Even in an era that produced some extraordinarily beautiful machinery, Jaguar’s new sports car caused a sensation.

Long bonnet. Tiny cabin. Flowing bodywork. Covered headlights on the early cars. Wire wheels tucked beneath beautifully proportioned arches.

It looked exotic.

More importantly, it had the performance to justify its appearance.

The original E-Type used Jaguar’s proven 3.8-litre XK straight-six engine, producing a claimed 265 bhp. Jaguar quoted a top speed of around 150 mph, which was extraordinary territory for a road car in 1961.

Yet perhaps the greatest shock was the price.

Here was a British sports car offering looks and performance comparable with some extremely exotic machinery while costing substantially less.

Jaguar had produced something genuinely remarkable.

From Coventry to Geneva At Speed

The story of the E-Type’s Geneva launch has itself become part of British motoring folklore.

Demand for test drives was so great that Jaguar needed another E-Type in Switzerland.

Jaguar executive Bob Berry had already driven the fixed-head coupé from Coventry to Geneva for the launch.

Another car was required…. Jaguar test driver Norman Dewis was given the job.

He drove the E-Type roadster, registration 77 RW, through the night from Coventry to Geneva, arriving in time for the following day’s demonstrations.

It’s difficult to imagine a better introduction to the character of the E-Type.

Before the world had even properly met it, someone was already using one for an enormous cross-European drive.

It was built to be driven.

More Than Beautiful Bodywork

It’s easy to concentrate entirely on the E-Type’s appearance, but that would be doing the car a considerable injustice.

The E-Type wasn’t simply styled to look fast. Much of its shape came from aerodynamic thinking, particularly through the work of Malcolm Sayer.

Sayer had an unusual background for an automotive designer. His understanding of aerodynamics had been developed through aviation before he joined Jaguar, and his approach was based heavily upon mathematics and aerodynamic principles rather than styling alone.

His influence could already be seen in Jaguar’s competition cars, particularly the C-Type and D-Type.

The E-Type carried that thinking onto the road, beneath its beautiful exterior was equally interesting engineering.

Rather than using a conventional full chassis, the central passenger compartment employed monocoque construction, while a tubular front structure carried the engine and front suspension.

The E-Type also featured independent suspension at all four corners and four-wheel disc brakes, technology heavily influenced by Jaguar’s considerable motorsport experience, this was a sophisticated car.

Born From Racing Experience

During the 1950s, Jaguar had become one of the great forces at Le Mans.

The C-Type won in 1951 and 1953.

The extraordinary D-Type followed, winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1955, 1956 and 1957.

Those victories mattered far beyond trophies in a cabinet.

Competition pushed Jaguar to develop aerodynamics, braking systems, engines and lightweight construction under some of the harshest conditions imaginable.

The E-Type wasn’t a road-going D-Type, but it came from a company that had learned how to build fast cars by competing at the very highest level, that heritage was embedded in its engineering.

The Series 1

For many enthusiasts, the earliest E-Type remains the purest interpretation of the design.

Introduced with the 3.8-litre XK engine in 1961, it was available as both a Fixed Head Coupé and an Open Two Seater roadster.

The famous covered headlights, small rear lights and delicate detailing give these early cars their instantly recognisable appearance.

In 1964, engine capacity increased from 3.8 to 4.2 litres.

Peak power was broadly similar, but the larger engine provided additional torque and made the car more flexible in everyday driving.

A fully synchronised gearbox was another welcome improvement over the earlier Moss transmission.

Later, Jaguar added the longer-wheelbase 2+2, giving the E-Type greater practicality and opening the car to another group of customers.

The Series 2

By the late 1960s, changing regulations, particularly those affecting cars sold in the United States, inevitably influenced the E-Type.

The Series 2 arrived with a number of changes.

The beautiful glass headlamp covers disappeared, the lighting arrangements changed, cooling was improved and the bumpers became more substantial.

Inside, further alterations reflected changing safety requirements.

Purists often favour the cleaner appearance of the Series 1, but the Series 2 remains very much an E-Type and brought useful improvements to a car that was increasingly expected to operate reliably in markets around the world.

Then Jaguar Added a V12

By the beginning of the 1970s, the E-Type had been in production for a decade.

Jaguar could have allowed it to quietly reach retirement, instead, it gave it twelve cylinders.

The Series 3 E-Type, introduced in 1971, received Jaguar’s new 5.3-litre V12.

The car also changed considerably around it, a wider track, revised styling and longer wheelbase gave the Series 3 a noticeably different character from the delicate early cars.

The Fixed Head Coupé disappeared, leaving the roadster and 2+2.

If the original E-Type was a lithe British sports car, the V12 increasingly became a powerful grand tourer.

Different, certainly.

But there’s something wonderfully extravagant about an E-Type with a twelve-cylinder engine beneath that enormous bonnet.

Is It the Most Beautiful Car Ever Made?

That question inevitably follows the E-Type wherever it goes, beauty is subjective, of course, but if you don’t think it is then you are just plain wrong.

There will always be someone who prefers an Aston Martin DB5, Ferrari 250 GT, Lamborghini Miura or another of the extraordinary shapes created during the twentieth century.

But more than sixty years after its introduction, an E-Type still makes people stop, look and listen.

That’s significant.

It doesn’t require an enthusiast to explain why it’s special.

The proportions do the talking.

That impossibly long bonnet, the low roofline of the coupé, the tiny windscreen of the roadster and that wonderful taper towards the rear make it immediately recognisable from almost any angle.

There are very few cars for which the word timeless genuinely seems appropriate.

The E-Type is one of them.

Museum Piece or Motor Car?

And this brings us back to that sunny British morning, today, particularly desirable E-Types can be extremely valuable.

Early cars are collected, restored meticulously and understandably treated with considerable care.

There is nothing wrong with preserving important pieces of Britain’s motoring heritage.

But there’s a question every enthusiast eventually faces:

Would you actually drive it?

Imagine opening the garage on a beautiful summer morning.

The sky is clear.

The roads are dry.

An E-Type Roadster is sitting there.

Do you really leave it under the cover?

At Great British Rally, we’d argue that occasionally, at least, the answer has to be no.

Check it over.

Check the fluids.

Check the tyres.

Lower the roof.

And go for a drive.

Not recklessly.

Not to prove anything.

Simply because driving a wonderful car along a wonderful road remains one of life’s little pleasures, the experience is priceless.

Jaguar didn’t give the E-Type that straight-six or V12 engine, independent suspension, disc brakes and beautiful aerodynamic bodywork solely so that generations later we could admire it beneath fluorescent lights.

It is an important piece of motoring history.

But it’s also a motor car.

From E-Type to F-Type

We’ve previously featured the Jaguar F-Type here at Great British Rally, and it’s impossible to discuss that car without acknowledging the enormous shadow cast by its ancestor.

Jaguar wisely didn’t attempt to simply recreate the E-Type.

How could it?

The world that produced the E-Type no longer existed.

But the basic idea survived.

A beautiful British sports car.

A long bonnet.

An engine at the front.

Drive to the rear wheels.

And a car designed to make the journey itself feel special.

Separated by half a century, the E-Type and F-Type tell two chapters of the same story.

Whatever You Drive, Get Out There

Most of us don’t have an E-Type waiting in the garage.

That doesn’t really matter.

The thing we love about the E-Type isn’t exclusively the car.

It’s what the car represents, Freedom, Adventure, Engineering, Beautiful roads, and sometimes driving somewhere simply because you enjoy driving.

So while Britain is giving us these wonderful clear skies and dry roads, make the most of them.

You don’t need an E-Type, take the classic you’ve been meaning to exercise, take the convertible and put the roof down, take the sports car, take the hot hatch, or just wind down the window of whatever happens to be sitting outside your house.

Choose the interesting road instead of the quickest one, find somewhere you’ve never visited, stop for a cup of tea, take some photographs and most importantly of all just enjoy the journey.

Because you certainly don’t need a Jaguar E-Type to experience the spirit of the open road.

But if somebody offered us the keys to one, we wouldn’t say no.

What’s Your E-Type?

Is the Jaguar E-Type one of your dream cars?

Would you choose the purity of an early 3.8-litre Series 1, the more developed 4.2, or the effortless character of the later V12?

And perhaps more importantly:

If you owned one, would you preserve it or drive it?

Tell us what you think.

Great British Rally

The Spirit of the
